Cradled between St. Maarten and Antigua in the Eastern Caribbean, the sister islands of St. Kitts and Nevis call themselves "The Secret Caribbean," but the way tourist accommodations have expanded in the last 10 years, the islands won't be "secrets" too much longer. These two islands make up the smallest country in the west and have the attractions to match it. The biggest selling points? Sand and sun...doubled.

Physically beautiful, the islands are a patchwork of rolling green mountains surrounded by miles of unexplored, shallow reefs, swim-through caves and grottoes. More than 400 shipwrecks, dating back to the 1600s, lie below their clear waters. Narrow strips of black and gold sand beaches skirt much of the coast.St. Kitts is an oval-shaped landmass that stretches out into a long, narrow peninsula extending like a guitar handle from its south-eastern corner. Formed from volcanic eruption, its central area is a rugged mountain range, whose highest point is the dormant volcano, Mount Liamuiga, at 3,792 feet. Tropical forests, ridges and waterfalls at the high elevations contrast with its lowlands where spacious and fertile valleys produce an abundance of sugar cane, sea-island cotton and peanuts. Most of the beaches are black volcanic sand, though white, sandy beaches can be found along the southeast peninsula of Frigate Bay and Salt Pond. Overall, the islands are a must.
